Utilities Activation

Utilities Activation

Activate electricity, gas, water, and internet for your new home in Italy

Electricity (Luce)

Contract with a supplier (fornitore) for your POD (point of delivery).

Gas (Gas)

Gas contract for heating and cooking where applicable.

Water & Internet

Water often via landlord; internet (fibra/ADSL) from telecom providers.

When you move into a new property in Italy, you need to activate utilities. Electricity (luce) and gas (gas) are typically in the tenant's name. You choose a supplier (fornitore) and sign a contract linked to your POD (electricity) or PDR (gas)—identification codes for the supply point. The previous tenant or landlord should provide these codes. Activation can often be done online or by phone; some suppliers require a technician visit. Water may be included in the condominium fees or managed separately.

Internet (fibra or ADSL) is contracted with telecom providers (TIM, Vodafone, WindTre, etc.). Installation may take days or weeks. We help you identify the right providers, compare offers, and complete the activation process. We also assist with subentro (taking over an existing contract from the previous tenant) or voltura (change of contract holder), which can be simpler than a new activation. For assignees, we coordinate timing with your move-in date so utilities are ready when you arrive.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about utilities in Italy

Where do I find the POD and PDR codes?

They are on your electricity and gas meters or on previous bills. The landlord or previous tenant should provide them. The POD is usually 14 digits; the PDR for gas is similar.

What is subentro vs. new activation?

Subentro means taking over the existing contract from the previous tenant. It is often faster than a new activation. Voltura is a change of contract holder. We help you choose the best option.

How long does activation take?

Electricity and gas can often be activated within a few days, sometimes same-day for subentro. Internet installation may take 1–3 weeks depending on the provider and area.

Do I need an Italian bank account for utilities?

Most providers prefer or require an Italian IBAN for direct debit (RID). Some accept international cards for initial setup. We advise on the options available.
