Residenza (residence) is your official registration with the Italian municipality (comune) where you live. It is recorded in the anagrafe (civil registry) and is a prerequisite for many administrative steps: obtaining the tessera sanitaria, converting your driver's license, opening certain bank accounts, and accessing utilities. Without residenza, you cannot fully integrate into the Italian system.

To register, you go to the Ufficio Anagrafe of your comune with proof of address (lease, utility contract, or a dichiarazione di ospitalità from the property owner), your ID, and permesso di soggiorno if applicable. The comune may carry out a verification visit (verifica di residenza) to confirm you actually live at the address.
