Driver's License Conversion

Driver's License Conversion

Convert your foreign license to an Italian patente di guida

EU License Exchange

EU/EEA licenses can be exchanged for an Italian patente without exam.

Non-EU Conversion

US, UK, and other non-EU licenses: conversion or full exam depending on reciprocity.

Document Preparation

Translation, legalization, and Motorizzazione Civile procedures.

If you hold an EU or EEA driver's license and establish residence in Italy, you must exchange it for an Italian patente within one year. The exchange is administrative—no exam required—and is done at the Ufficio della Motorizzazione Civile or through authorized offices (e.g. some ACI offices). You need your license, residence certificate, codice fiscale, and photos.

For non-EU licenses (US, UK, etc.), Italy has reciprocity agreements with some countries. Where reciprocity exists, you may convert without a full exam, but you often need a sworn translation and sometimes legalization. Where no reciprocity exists, you must take the full Italian driving exam. We help you determine your situation, prepare documents, and complete the conversion process at the Motorizzazione Civile.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about driver's license conversion

Can I drive in Italy with my US or UK license?

Tourists can usually drive with a valid foreign license (and IDP when required) for short stays. Once you establish residence, you must convert to an Italian license within the applicable deadline (e.g. one year for EU licenses).

Does Italy have reciprocity with the US?

Italy has reciprocity agreements with some US states. Where it exists, you can convert without the full exam. We check your state's status and guide you through the process.

What if I need to take the Italian driving exam?

Where conversion is not possible, you must take the theory and practical exams. We help you understand the process, book the exams, and prepare the required documentation.

How long does the conversion take?

For EU license exchange, it can take a few weeks once documents are submitted. For non-EU conversion, timing depends on reciprocity, translation, and Motorizzazione Civile processing.
